We got lucky two weeks ago, when I was leading a tour in Spiti Valley with a group of photography enthusiasts. The monastery at Ki Village had decided to celebrate their annual festival on the dates that coincided our visit. Unlike in Ladakh, where festivals are planned well in advance and you can work your visit around them, monasteries in Spiti plan the festivals at a short notice. We had the good fortune to be there at the right time. Some images from the fest.

I have already discussed my reaching Joshimath and my rest day at Joshimath. About time I started writing the trek account. To start the trek I needed to reach Govindghat fromJoshimath. Sohan Singh ji (my guide on this trek as well as Kuari Pass Trek ) recommended the start time of 7.00 am. He said it takes one hour by jeep to reach Govind Ghat. There are two jeep stands at Joshimath. If you start walking towards Govind Ghat the jeeps go from the second one which is about a kilometer away from [...] |

Danny’s Olympics’ Ceremony…
Chalo ji, koi baat nahi…blink! And the Indian Contingent was gone. Which is just as well given those ridiculous P.C.Sorcar- style turbans and our athletes strolling casually into the stadium like they were ambling at India Gate. Of course, nobody [...] |

As far back as half a century ago, you finished high school and matriculation, and as a matter of course , went over to a college of your choice and took admission. The admissions were always on merit, and you never had to fight for places in admission queues, fee queues, neither were you part of any queues that went around a college building. The only entrance test one heard about then, was the JEE for IIT's, and folks studied for it, appeared for tests, and got selected, in the normal course of [...] |

Epic Adventures!
Today I start a new series on my blog, one that I am really excited about. I choose to call them "Epic Adventures", for they are Epic! I have met/heard of many people over the course of the past four years since I started traveling and quite often I was surprised and inspired by what others have been doing. They have been pushing their limits, testing the waters, heading into the unknown, in whatever way possible, big or small. Mountains and adventure is something I can never get enough [...] |

I did not think this was a pornographic mail. How do you think would our Hindu Taliban groups react to an email like this? Would their reactions be different if the email was from a man? What would be your … Continue reading → |

P reface
Let’s call things by their proper name. What is continuing to unfold in Assam is soft Jihad. It isn’t an ethnic strife, much less a riot . It is soft Jihad not in terms of the scale or intensity of violence but because it is not explicitly unleashed by an Islamic state—or by an Islamic terrorist-superstar like Bin Laden—against a non-Islamic state. It follows a theological dictum from which emerged a time-tested pattern, which has been consistently repeated across both world history and [...] |

Having got back from an amazing holiday , where I had a lot of time to lie in a hammock, gaze at the blue blue sky punctuated with the deep green coconut trees, accompanied by the gentle lap-lapping sounds of the waves of the beautiful backwaters, as they kissed the rocky embankment, I discovered the luxury of time, as well as a lot of answers to questions I always pondered about.
The hammock that brought introspection
I thought about all the people who were in my life who arent [...] |
